Instagram has been moving more and more toward an interest-based algorithm – pushing content to people who don’t follow you yet. Most people saw this as pressure to post more, create dozens of Trial Reels, chase more trends, but I saw it differently.
I saw an opportunity to optimize the one thing people see after the algorithm puts your content in front of them: your profile.
I’ve been building my business online for five years now (and working online for 12) and for most of that time, I operated the way that had always worked: Educate, show up with authority, give people a small win, post as many Reels as possible and post every single day.
But in January I completely shifted my strategy and I stopped optimizing for followers and started optimizing for conversion. I ended up growing my following by over 12,000 in less than 90 days while – get this – posting less, with way less effort.
It worked so well that I decided to try it again on a brand new social media management client who had been stuck at 10.8 followers for a year. Today is day 3 of posting for her. I updated the bio, changed the profile photo and she is now at 11.6K in less than 24 hours with 3 new posts total since I took over.

In just three days, with three posts, we’ve grown over 800 followers and counting, and I’m almost positive it’s the bio playing a massive role in this because the content hasn’t changed!
After 12 years of doing this personally for thousands of clients, I know that most profiles are set up wrong. For starters, your bio reads like everyone else’s – it’s just a list of credentials or a vague description of what you do followed by some cute emojis and how many kids you have. Your highlights show everything you’ve ever done from 174 weeks ago, taking people nowhere fast. People might be landing on your profile, scrolling for a likely less than 45 seconds, and move right on.
Here’s what I know:
Your profile should not read like a resume because it’s a sales page, and not just any sales page – it’s one that needs to show alignment because people don’t just want to know what you do, they want to know who you are, what you stand for, how you think, and why they should trust you with their money. Every single element of your profile should answer one question: “Is this exactly what I’ve been looking for?”
Remember, at the end of the day, we’re all inherently self-interested. We all want to know “what’s in it for me?” and the truth is that almost every profile that I look at (and I look at A LOT) don’t pass that simple test and there are three invisible conversion killers hiding in almost every profile I audit. Most people can’t see them because they’re looking at their profile as the owner, not as a buyer – and from that angle, everything looks fine. But from a buyer’s perspective? It’s confusing, unclear and does not inspire trust to hit that follow button.
Killer #1 lives in your bio.
You don’t answer the one question buyers actually need: “Why should I trust you with my money?”
Your bio tells people what you do, maybe it even tells them who you help – but it doesn’t show context, and it doesn’t establish credibility. There is no clear payoff aka doesn’t give them a reason to believe you can actually help them, and so they scroll past.
Here’s what most bios look like:
“Marketing strategist | Helping busy entrepreneurs grow their business 🚀 | Mom of 3 | Dog lover 🐶”
Okay… but why you? What makes you different from the 47 other marketing strategists I just scrolled past? What have you done? Who have you helped? What transformation do you create?
Your bio needs to do three things: show clarity (what you do and who it’s for), establish social proof (why should I believe you), and include a conversion element (what should I do next). Most bios do one of these, maybe two if you’re lucky, but almost none do all three.
Killer #2 is hiding across your entire grid.
People land on your profile and can’t figure out what you sell or what to do next. Your offer is buried in captions. Your pinned posts are just that one Reel that got yo the most views you’ve ever had from six months ago, and your highlights are a sad folder of old stories – “Behind the Scenes,” “Client Love,” “About Me” – that don’t actually guide anyone anywhere. There’s no clear path from “just looking” to “ready to buy.”
I see this constantly. Someone will be posting every single day, have real expertise and passion … and zero sales. Then, when I go to audit their profile, I don’t even know what they’re selling because it’s so buried in a mess of random content. I have to dig through captions, click through to their link tree, hunt for information – and it’s usually outdated. If I can’t figure it out – and this is literally what I do for a living – your ideal client definitely can’t and they’re not going to keep diggin for it.
Your offer needs to be visible and repeated across your grid.
Every three to five posts should make the right people want to click or DM you.
Your pinned posts should take someone to a next step.
Your highlights should answer objections, build trust, and guide people toward your offers.
Without that clear path, people visit, look around, think “nice content,” and leave without taking any action. What a waste!
Killer #3 is the invisible leak.
This one costs you the most clients – literal money.
You’re getting profile visits – maybe even a decent amount, but there’s no conversion happening because your profile doesn’t have a system. There is no clear first impression strategy, no visual cohesion that builds trust, and no lead capture that works for you on the backend. You’ve basically put a lot of time and energy into a storefront that has no door. I call this the “conversion leak” because you’re losing potential clients at every single step of the journey. They land on your profile (first impression), read your bio (positioning), scroll your grid (visual identity), try to figure out what you offer (offer visibility), and then… nothing. There is no clear next step, no way to capture their interest, an no path to purchase.
Now I know I’ve been going on a bit of a lecture here but you probably don’t even know this is happening. Instagram doesn’t tell you any of this because it’s not in their interest to. If they actually showed you how much they’re benefitting from your unpaid labor – your content, your data, your audience – while you see little to no return, they would lose tens of millions of users overnight. It just wouldn’t be worth it for them.
And that’s exactly why I’m so passionate about helping you make it worth it for you.
After doing this work privately for 12 years – auditing profiles for six-figure coaches, service providers stuck at 2K followers, consultants who couldn’t figure out why their content wasn’t converting – I decided to release a training. I realized that most people just need to see what I see, and they need someone to show them how to look at their profile through a buyer’s lens instead of an owner’s lens. I outline the same framework, the system, the exact questions to ask themselves.
The Calm Seller’s Profile Audit walks you through the exact 5-step audit system I use to audit client profiles every week, and the same one that brings sales, follows, and dare I say it…virality.
In this training you’ll learn:
✔ My 5-step path that turns viewers into buyers (first impressions → bio → visual identity → offer visibility → lead capture)
✔ The positioning mistakes that quietly repel buyers (even when your content is great)
✔ How to write a bio that sells without sounding salesy or robotic
✔ What your highlights should actually be doing (hint: not just storing old stories)
✔ The exact lens to audit your profile in under 30 minutes so you can fix what’s broken right now
Then you’ll update your profile using what you learn and submit it for review. Think of it as a mini audit without the $400 price tag.
This isn’t for influencers. This is for sellers. If you’re building a business that doesn’t depend on going viral, this training is for you.
People who sell services, coaching, expertise. People who are building businesses that don’t depend on going viral or chasing the algorithm. People who want their profile to work for them instead of constantly working to feed it.
If that’s you, the training is here. It’s just $17.
If your profile is not bringing in clients right now – if people are visiting and leaving without taking action – you don’t need better content. Your profile just isn’t set up to convert. But that’s fixable.
